| From the Duxford Diary: SPECIALISTS AT WORK Rich man, poor man ...doctor...lawyer; the Army air force trained men from every profession to perform the intricate work necessary to keep fighting aircraft ready for battle. From first echelon maintenance to battle and accident repair damage; from carpentry and welding to cleaning and inspecting; from revising to rebuilding, these specialists were the men behind the pilot who flew the plane. Nor was their work restricted to airplanes. Mechanics were needed on mobile equipment; stock men and clerks handled records and supplies; carpenters and machinists and metal works constructed and maintained buildings, built lockers, repaired hangars; cooks and bakers fed the hungry personnel; skilled firefighters were on the job day and night; financial experts computed pay and allowances; postal clerks handled large amounts of official and domestic mail; military police and others kept law and order, did guard duty and performed station defense protection-almost everyone, from photographer who took pictures to the link trainer operator who gave refresher and instruction courses to pilots was a specialist in his line of work. Everyone was a part of the gigantic functioning of a fighter airbase. |
