84th Service Squadron

The 84th Service Squadron was activated as the 332nd Material Squadron on February3,
1942 at Barksdale Field, La. It then moved to Esler Field, La., and was redesignated the
332nd Service Squadron of the 333rd Service Group. It embarked for overseas on the
24th of Septeber, 1942 under the command of Major Marcel A. Richer. Major Wyburn C.
Dozier took command at Goxhill and the squadron arrived at Duxford on April 4, 1943 and
served until August of 1944. Captain James Graham served as interm commander during
August until he could be replaced by Major Allen G. Myers who served until April of 1945.
It was renamed the 84th Service Squadron in February 1944 as part of the 79th Service
Group.

The 84th Service Squadron was presented the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque "for
Superior performance of duty in the accomplishment of exceptionally difficult tasks and
achievement and maintenance of a high standard of discipline for the period of 1 March to
7 June 1944". The citation also said "Working day and night, often under the most
adverse weather conditions, the personnel of the 84th Service Squadron accomplished
ninety percent of all the repairs" on aircraft of the 78th fighter Group, which flew
approximately 4,400 sorties during the period. The service unit made those repairs, the
citation said, "in the minimum of time, thus contributing much to (fighter) group's sucess in
combat and to the prosecution of the war against Germany."
