The 78th wasn't always at Duxford. Many of the personnel that formed the
78th came from the 14th Pursuit Group. This is the place to find pre-war and

4th Air Force 10th Pursuit Wing
The 14th Pursuit Group was activated at Hamilton Field, California on
January 15, 1941 under the command of 1st Lieutenant Troy Keith.
The Group was composed of the 48th Squadron under 2nd Lieutenant
William Fulmer; the 49th Pursuit Squadron under 2nd Lieutenant James
Dowling; the 50th Pursuit Squadron under 2nd Lieutenant Gilbert Mullins.
On June 10th, 1941 the 14th Pursuit Group was transferred to March
Field, California, and took up operations in Hangers 1 and 2.
At March the Group was under the command of Major Thayer Olds.
The Group was composed of the 48th Squadron under 1st Lieutenant
Troy Keith; the 49th Pursuit Squadron under 1st Lieutenant Arman
Peterson; the 50th Pursuit Squadron under 1st Lieutenant Frank James.
July, August and September training was conducted at Horseshoe Lake
in the Sierra Mountains.
September 1941 the 14th had a roster of 794 enlisted men and 61
officers.
