Marinduque 2009

The Marinduque Extreme Series 2 Duathlon Competition and
Aggressive Cross Country Bike Race
These events were held on Saturday November 28 and Sunday
November 29 at the old CMI mining area in Capayang, Mogpog.
Saturday was a little rainy but Sunday was nice and bright. We got to
meet a lot of the teams that came from mainland Luzon and they were
impressed with Marinduque and the people that made them feel at
home. A more complete reporting of the race can be found by

The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, Bgy. Bagtingon, Buenavista. Not an
easy place to find, the turn off is not marked so look for the National
Highway marker just north of Buena Vista seen below and turn onto the dirt
road. Once on the road just ask the locals, they can get you to the parking
area which is also not marked.
Dirt parking lot. Dirt access road is at top of picture.

It is a lot steps from the bottom of the hill to the grotto at the top. The
photos above an below show some of the trek involved.
Once at the top you will be treated to a great view of the
Southern end of Marinduque with Elephant Island and Mt.
Malindig as the focal points.
You will also be treated to wonderful and colorful plant and flower displays all along the walkways.

Sipa Anyone? It is the first time I have seen this game played. The
Mogpog High school team practiced on the Laon Basketball court across
from the house so I got to see to played up close.
Wikipedia describes Sipa this way:
Sipa (lit. kick or to kick) is the Philippines' traditional native sport which
predates Spanish rule. The game is related to Sepak Takraw.
The game is both played by two teams, indoors or outdoors, on a court
that is about the size of a tennis court. The teams consist of one, two or
four players in each side. The aim of the game is to kick a soft ball made
out of rattan fragments, back and forth over a net in the middle of the
court. The sport requires speed, agility and ball control.
To me it looked like a cross between soccer and vollyball.
